|Dr. Michael P. Hayes is the co-owner of Old Town Psychological Services and also serves as the clinical and executive director. He has served in this capacity since 1999. Previously, he worked in various capacities for the community mental health system. He has worked in private practice since 1993 in the Grand Traverse Region. He received his undergraduate degree in psychology in 1990 from Central Michigan University. He later completed a master's degree program at Goddard College in counseling and psychology in 1993. He then completed a Ph.D. program in clinical psychology in 1996 at The Union Institute Graduate School. He is licensed as a psychologist in the State of Michigan and is also a member of the Michigan Psychological Association and American Psychological Association. His specialty areas in clinical service are in psychological testing and evaluation, posttraumatic stress disorder, attention deficit disorders, depression/anxiety, evaluation and treatment of various childhood disorders, serving individuals undergoing Bariatric surgery and custody and divorce issues.
Linda Theis, Ph.D is a limited licensed psychologist, having earned her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Walden University. She also holds two Master's degrees in education (Elementary Education and Multicategorical Special Education). She has over 15 years teaching experience working with grades K-12. She also has developed a workshop on positive thinking/resilience training. She has been a public speaker on topics related to special education and posttraumatic growth. Her interests are in working with posttraumatic growth, cultural issues, and special education and posttraumatic growth. Her interests are in working with posttraumatic growth, cultural issues, and special education. Her master's thesis topic related to Reactive Attachment Disorder, and her doctoral dissertation related to enculturation/acculturation issues and posttraumatic growth among Native Americans.
Brian Majerczyk is a staff psychologist with Old Town Psychological Services and has been with the organization since 2000. He has earned a Masters degree in Behavioral Psychology from Western Michigan University. He is currently employed on a full time basis as a psychologist in Michigan's prison system. Current specialties include working with children with behavioral disorders, providing group counseling services and treating substance abuse disorders. In addition, he provides disability evaluations and consults on issues pertaining to behavioral psychology.
Theresa Stack is a clinical therapist at Old Town Psychological Services. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a Master’s degree in Recreational Therapy from Central Michigan University. She completed a second Master’s degree in Social Work from Grand Valley State University. Theresa has worked in the mental health field for over twenty years and for eight years in the public school system. She is a Licensed Master’s level Social Worker and a member of the National Association of Social Workers. Specialties include provision of individual and group therapy for adults, adolescents, and children in the areas of depression, anxiety, attention deficit disorder, grief, and post-traumatic stress disorder. In addition she specializes in family and marriage counseling, including the areas of divorce and child custody. Theresa also works with many veterans at the Vet Center in Traverse City.
James Talbott is a staff psychologist with Old Town Psychological Services and he joined the organization in 1999. He earned his Master's degree in Clinical Psychology from Eastern Michigan University. He has worked in the mental health field for over thirty years mainly in the public mental health system. He continues to work on a full time basis for Northern Lakes Community Mental Health and works in the emergency and counseling departments. Jim is a member of the Michigan Association of Professional Psychologists. He currently specializes in providing disability evaluations, psychological testing, treatment of depression/anxiety, and crisis intervention.
Jenny Phelan joined Old Town Psychological Services in the spring of 2006 and works as Dr. Hayes’ assistant, and a test technician. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Western Michigan University, and is completing a Master’s degree in Social Work from Grand Valley State University. She is skilled in crisis intervention, and is certified by ASIST, a suicide intervention program.
Carol Anderson joined OTPS as a staff therapist in January, 2011. She has worked in the fields of education, social work, and spirituality. Dr. Anderson has over 25 years experience in the fields of mental health and addictions - primarily as a therapist, but also as a program developer and clinical director. She is a licensed social worker and has a Doctor of Ministry degree with a focus on spirituality and interfaith practice. She has also worked in the capacity of Adjunct Professor at both Ferris State University and Grand Valley State University. She is the author of "Where All Our Journeys End: Searching for the Beloved in Everyday Life." Her speciality areas include mental health (especially depression and anxiety) and substance abuse, grief and trauma, women's issues, chronic pain, GLBT issues, spiritual concerns, and transpersonal psychology.
Jeffrey W. Katke has been a counselor at Old Town Psychological Services since winter of 2010. He is a graduate of Oakland University, and has a Master of Arts in Counseling. He is also a member of Chi Sigma Iota Honor Society. Jeff is a Certified Veteran Service Officer (CVSO) helping veterans in the area. He is a husband, a father, and a grandfather, having experienced the loss of a job, home, wife, and granddaughter. He specializes in counseling individuals, couples, and groups. Jeff is experienced in counseling those who are grieving, adjusting to life changes, have anxiety, depression, and mood disorders. His therapy techniques include Client-centered Therapy, Cognitive-behavioral Therapy, and Exposure Therapy.
Kristina Simerson joined Old Town Psychological Services in the fall of 2007 and holds the position of Billing and Office Manager. She has experience working with community outreach programs, and is knowledgeable in helping clients connect with available resources. Kristina is active in a support group in her free time.
Greg Hamilton joined Old Town Psychological Services as a therapist in February of 2011. He is a native of Traverse City and a former professional educator. Before retiring in 2008, he spent over twenty years as a high school guidance counselor assisting students with a variety of academic and personal counseling issues. Greg completed a bachelor degree from Alma College in 1981 and a master of arts in counseling degree from Central Michigan University in 1986. He is also a licensed professional counselor and a member of the American Psychotherapy Association. He utilizes creative, eclectic, as well as cognitive behavioral therapy approaches across a broad range of issues including trauma and loss, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression, substance abuse, traumatic brain injury and adjustment disorders. His professional, personal and academic background allows him to be very effective with children and adolescents. In addition, he specializes in working with adult male counseling issues.
Kelsey Marshall is the receptionist at Old Town Psychological Services’ second location in Gaylord. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology at Central Michigan University and plans to continue her education at the Masters level in the near future. She has enjoyed working with children in the past, specifically as a coach for 5th and 6th grade girls through the Girls on the Run program, and hopes to work with them again as a family or school counselor.
Annette Goodyear is a mother of four who has been working at Old Town Psychological Services since August 2011. She is Certified Family Life Educator and a Professional Counselor. She has a Masters of Arts degree in Counseling from Western Michigan University, where her focus was on addictions; sex, gambling, shopping, drug and alcohol. She also has experience and interest in depression, anxiety, gender/sex issues, anger management, eating disorders, grief, and communication/conflict issues between couples. She has spent two years volunteering at Michael's Place doing group and individual sessions with people experiencing grief and loss. Heidi Stewart is a receptionist at Old Town Psychological Services’ in Traverse City location. She has been with the office since February 2011. Heidi is attending classes at Northwestern Michigan College in hopes to obtain her degree in elementary education with a Psychology minor.
Larry J. Porta, M.A. After a successful 14 year commercial real estate career, Larry decided to return to school and earned a Masters Degree in Counseling from Reformed Theological Seminary, Orlando Fl. Larry owned and managed the largest private counseling practice in Orlando, FL for over 10 years before he and his wife moved back home to Michigan. Larry Enjoys counseling individuals, adolescents, families and couples. He believes in collaborating closely with multidisciplinary team members, clients, and family members in establishing individual goals consistent with an overall integrated treatment plan. Larry conducts psychological assessments and diagnosis with extensive experience in addiction recovery and sexual abuse for adults and teens; holds national and international addiction specialist certifications. Larry is an avid outdoorsman who loves fly-fishing, archery, surfing, kayaking, camping, and hunting. Larry travels throughout the United States in pursuit of these adventures. He loves to share his passions, so he created Braveheart Adventures to provide others with the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and pursue their hearts.
